I am a South African national with six years’ experience in the ESL industry in three different countries (South Africa, Singapore and Vietnam). Even though I came to the ESL industry in my thirties, after a ten-year stint in book retail, I have had the privilege of gaining experience in a variety of roles from teacher to acting academic director.
I have taught all levels of proficiency, and specific areas of interest are business English and exam teaching (Cambridge, IELTS and TOEFL). In the last year or two, I have even branched out into coaching colleagues in current ESL best practices, e.g. applying the communicative method. In this regard, my professional ethos is facilitating and maximising student learning through real communication.
Currently, I am a senior teacher at Wall Street English Vietnam. Because Vietnamese students understand structures very well, part of my professional growth has stemmed from focusing extensively on pronunciation and the mechanics of producing English sounds, at which the Vietnamese are particularly weak.
I am well read and interested in the world and current affairs. In addition, I can adapt my teaching for different ages, learning styles and cultural backgrounds. In part, this is due to coming from a multicultural country. Therefore, cultural sensitivity is an essential component of my teaching awareness.
As an aside, I have a partner who is also in the ESL industry. It would be preferable if we could travel together. Whilst we would like to reside in the same location, we do not have to be employed at the same school/site.
