English Centre in Locri, Italy: Used and Abused! (views: 114)

English Centre in Locri, Italy: Used and Abused! Picture this. You’re interested in Italy as an ESL location. You think it would be neat to live by the coast as well. You apply for a position in the southern region of Calabria and the director contacts you to arrange an interview. Everything seems par for the course. The interview goes really well and the director is full of praise for you, claiming that you’re exactly what they need ....

Hey,  I worked with Number 16 in Zaragoza a few years ago. They are the WORST of the worst! Dude, steer clear. Read all the posts on this forum about it, dating back to 2017. They've been running the scam for years and continue to get away with it because there's always someone desperate enough to take a chance on them. It's worth waiting until a better job offer comes up, especially with Xmas coming a lot of academies will be hiring for Jan....

I have just agreed to go to school in a few weeks. But having seen the reviews, most notably yours as it is so recent, I am having second thoughts.    I take it you're not still there? If you have left how did this end? Because I am having the fear that I may go out there and be stuck in a tenancy and then be forced to stay due to a contract with a landlord. Did you experience anything like this? Depending on your answer to that, d....

I responded to an ad on eslcafe.com for "Kendale International School" in Rome. In a couple days I was contacred for interview by a Mr. 'Barbara Alfaro'. The interview was less than 3 minutes, and I was told they just wanted to make sure i am a native speaker. It was so short I was sure they must have just been turned off for whatever reason, and assumed I didn't get the job. A couple days later they offered me 2500 Euro and housing. This seemed ....

I can only provide an outline  of my experience at the Zaragoza academies here. however the treatment I received was  appalling. Number 16, operated by an outfit called Unique English, is a chain of schools currently operating in Zaragoza and Madrid. They are a real company and they pay your salary. I'm not claiming this is a "scam" in the strict sense of the word but they are very bad employers. I joined after being offered a "25 hour work week" and "assistance with finding accomodation". This is a company with absolutely the worst reputation of any possible ESL employer in Spain, at least among the somewhat larger organizations. Teacher turnover is horrendous because they simply look for any warm body that speaks English as a native, give you a "training" for 5 days, and then throw you in the deep end, with -weekly- changes in timetables, students etc - in other words, no stability whatsoever, no life possible as you need 0800-22....

They are also specific to Zaragoza, and maybe these issues haven't arisen in other locations.   It's pointless to cover each problem again, as the original post is well-written and gives a comprehensive insight into what makes working for the academy so difficult.
